The driver touches the steering wheel more than anything else in the car except for the drivers seat. The driver also spends a lot of time looking through, or at, the steering wheel. Plus a great looking steering wheel can really set off the interior. So, the steering wheel is very important.
But is a steering wheel really worth $15,000 (excluding F1 race cars)? Well a seller on eBay believes that an original steering wheel from a real Ferrari 250GTO, below, is worth that much.
Just before I posted this the eBay listing ended although it was scheduled to last for more than 20 days. Maybe someone bought it?
Here are some of my other favorite steering wheels, none are for sale as far as I know.
This is the original wheel in my Bizzarrini, although it is no longer with the car sadly for me.
This is a Ferrari 250GTO steering wheel still attached to the car.
Arnolt Aston Martin, a work of art.
My Iso Grifo.
Intermeccanica Spider, what a fantastic interior with the perfect wheel.
BMW Isetta - the steering wheel must be light weight because it is attached to the door and moves away from the driver when the door is opened.
Jaguar race car - in this picture I was focused on the signature of Phil Hill on the door but the steering wheel is nice too.
Maserati, so elegant.
Bizzarrini P538, so purposeful.
Iso Grifo A3/C Sebring race car, so perfect.
The Steve McQueen Siata - imagine who held this steering wheel.
Another design for the Iso Grifo center button.
Spyker C8 Spider with the beautiful airplane propeller spokes. This means there is no airbag but none of the cars above have an airbag either.
Spyker D12 Peking to Paris. I love the aluminum on this wheel, and this car has an airbag.
All of these steering wheels really add something special to each car. The steering wheel is an important element of the art of the car.
