This ad below appeared in the December 1966 issue of Road & Track. If we only knew then what we know now. I suspect this car is now settled into a valuable collection and if it were to be put up for sale again the price would be several million dollars instead of $15,000 or best offer.
It is curious that the seller says this is a 275 Le Mans. My sources indicate that Ferrari made this model with two engine sizes but both were named 250 Le Mans. I assume the seller means to indicate that this is the larger engine displacement of 3.3 liters, so the use of the 275 label, where the 250 designation would indicate a 3 liter displacement engine.
This seller may be the co-founder of the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction company. He has the same name as one of the founders and his location is right.
There were only 32 of these cars made in 1964 and 1965 and one of them won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1965.
Here is a better picture.

At $15K, the LM was out of reach for most Americans at the time. An acquaintance of mine had one back then and used it as a daily driver along with his 275GTB. He lived on the beach near Topanga and had a beautiful French girlfriend. What a life!
ReplyDeleteWhat a life indeed. I know that $15K in 1966 was the cost of a house! But it is still interesting to see how certain cars have appreciated and others that cost the same in 1966 may not have appreciated nearly as much.
